Operation ‘Torre Del Oro': Kerala GST Seizes 120 Kg Of Unaccounted Gold
In a significant crackdown on gold jewellery manufacturing units in Thrissur, Keralas Goods and Services Tax (GST) department has seized 120 kilograms of unaccounted gold.
Thrissur, a hub for gold trade, witnessed one of the largest operations of its kind in the state, as reported by Deccan Herald.
The operation, named Torre del Oro after the historic Golden Tower in Seville, Spain, commenced on Wednesday evening and extended into Thursday.
Over 700 officials were involved in the raids, inspecting around 78 locations, including jewellery manufacturing units and the residences of jewellers across the central Kerala district.
According to official sources, the operation uncovered widespread irregularities in billing and tax processes, alongside the seizure of substantial quantities of gold.
The extensive raid was overseen by GST Special Commissioner Abraham Renn S.
, with GST Intelligence Deputy Commissioner Dinesh Kumar confirming that the operation will continue, as per media reports.
To maintain the element of surprise, officials from various parts of Kerala were brought to Thrissur under the guise of a training programme.
They were discreetly transported to different locations using buses marked study tour.
The operation marks a major step in cracking down on tax evasion in Keralas thriving gold trade industry.
