Bengal BJP President Gets ECI Notice Over Remarks Against National Emblem
The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Monday issued a show-cause notice to Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) West Bengal President Sukanta Majumdar for his remarks allegedly insulting the national emblem of India and the state police.
The notice was issued based on a complaint by the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) submitted on November 9.
The West Bengal’s ruling party had alleged that during a public meeting held on November 7, in Taldangra assembly, Majumdar made remarks allegedly insulting the national emblem of India and the state police.
“In view of the allegations made in the complaint, you are directed to submit your reply to the Commission by 20.
00 hrs on November 11,” the poll body said in the order to Majumdar.
In the event of no response from his side within the stipulated time, the poll body added, it will be presumed that he has nothing to say in the matter and the Election Commission will take appropriate action or decision in the matter without making any further reference.
The TMC alleged that Sukanta Majumdar “insulted” the emblem and the state police “by stating that police personnel should replace the emblem on their uniforms with icons resembling footwear”.
In the letter, the party claimed that Majumdar had asked the police to not “act as an agent of Trinamool”.
“Remove the Ashoka Stambh on your uniform and replace it with the symbol of a sandal.
Don’t hide behind the uniform,” he had said.
LETTER TO TMC
Along with letter to the BJP, the ECI also wrote to the TMC rejecting their “allegations regarding inaction and delayed response”, calling them “completely baseless, devoid of facts and misleading”.
In the two-page letter, the poll body said it is surprising that even after the prompt action by the Commission by 11 am on Sunday – within 20 hours of receipt of the TMC’s representation – there has been unwarranted comments of delay.
“As such, this commission rejects your allegations regarding inaction and delayed response as completely baseless, devoid of facts and misleading,” the ECI said.
